When you are in a relationship for an extended period of time, often one or both people start to get comfortable and complacent about it. Sometimes this can lead to the decline of the relationship, and its eventual demise. Although getting comfortable may be natural, here are some reasons this is a bad idea.

1.) Relationships Take Continued Effort.

When you are in a new relationship, both people are typically making the effort to look and act the best they can. They wear flattering clothes, compliment the other person, and have impeccable manners. Over time, the effort people put into this starts to dwindle. You may start wearing your old t-shirts around the house, and reverting to some bad habits from your single days. If you find that your relationship has become effortless, then you are too comfortable. It sends a signal that you aren't willing to spend the time and energy, and don't care what they think.

2.) You Need To Keep The Romance Alive.

When a relationship is young, people send flowers and love letters. They cook romantic dinners for two, and plan special getaways together. Love and romance is in the air. As time goes by, people often grow more distant, and the romantic events start to disappear. Quick meals take the place of romantic dinners, and love letters are a thing of the past. If you find yourself in this comfortable, but dull situation, take some steps to put the romance back into your relationship.

3.) People's Bad Habits Come Out.

When you're single, nobody cares if you eat cottage cheese straight from the container or leave your dirty socks on the living room floor. When a relationship is new, people usually clean up their bad habits, in order to make a good impression. As they get comfortable though, the bad habits start coming back out. Your partner may really hate seeing your dirty socks in the living room, so these bad habits can start to drive people apart. Look around, and see if any of your habits could use a correction.

4.) Sex Becomes Bland And Unexciting.

Over the years, couples sometimes slip into a routine when it comes to sex. They do the same thing over and over again, and it loses the excitement and intensity that it had in the early days. This is a sure sign of being too comfortable in your relationship. A healthy sex life is important, so you need to do something to reinvigorate this. Try a new position, or get a sexy new outfit. Let go of some inhibitions, and be willing to experiment with something new.

5.) You Don't Talk As Much As You Used To.

When people get too comfortable in a relationship, they often stop talking so much to each other. You may feel like you've heard the other person's stories a hundred times already, or that there's nothing new to say. This is a problem, because you start to lose touch with what is really going on in the other person's life. What are their challenges, disappointments, and triumphs? How are they really feeling today? You need to keep the communication alive.
