There are many treatment options for people who suffer from migraine headaches. This is good news, since migraines are extremely painful, and they cause a large number of symptoms and side effects. Sometimes, a person does not have the medication that they use on hand when a migraine hits, or they may be experiencing a migraine for the first time, and therefore has never needed the medication. Luckily, there are a lot of at-home remedies that do not include medication that can help the pain and other symptoms that come along with migraines subside. Most of these remedies have to deal with things that are already in the home, and if they are not already there, they are easy to purchase at the local grocery store, just in case a migraine happens again. Using these remedies will help relieve migraine symptoms if medication is not available to you at the current time of the migraine.

One of the triggers, and things that you become sensitive to when you have a migraine is light. You want to avoid it as much as possible, and if possible, avoid it altogether until the migraine has passed. One of the best ways to do this is to go into an interior room in the house that has no windows, like a bathroom. You should lie down on a cool surface, like a bathtub, if one is available. Make sure there is no light coming into the room by covering the crack at the bottom of the door, or if there is any light from windows or other areas of the house. Make sure it is cool and there is no noise, and put a cold, wet washcloth on your forehead. Close your eyes and relax. Although it may take time for your migraine symptoms to subside, this is the best environment for getting rid of migraines.

If you are experiencing the headache pain that comes along with a migraine, you can try massaging your head. There are pressure points that are located in the middle of the forehead, the corners of the eyes, and at the base of the skull. Using the first two fingers on each hand, press on these pressure points and massage in a circular motion. If you are pressing on the pressure points correctly, you can relieve the pain.

Although you may just want to shut yourself away from any noise and lay down until the migraine has gone away, you may want to try to make yourself a cup of chamomile tea before hand. Chamomile has anti-inflammatory and soothing properties that relieve the migraines. If you drink this tea regularly (three or four times a day), you may be able to prevent migraines from happening in the future.

Ice packs can also be a great way to get rid of the symptoms and pain that come along with a migraine. It can get rid of the tension in the head, as well as the headache itself. You can get an ice pack, or wrap some ice cubes in a clean towel. Place them on the forehead, the temples, or the back of your neck for at least 15 minutes. Choose whichever spot needs the most attention. You can also alternate between hot and cold compresses for about 15 minutes as needed to feel relief from the migraine.

Luckily for people who experience the pains of a migraine, there are a lot of wonderful options to treat them. In addition to medication, and in some cases in place of medication, these natural at-home remedies can be the perfect solution to get rid of that horrible migraine.
