It is said that following the list of foods you can eat on paleo diet will leave you as healthy as a human can possibly be. That is because you will give your body the food it is supposed to eat from an evolutionary perspective. Known as the “caveman diet”, the paleo diet is all about eating what our cavemen ancestors ate, before the agricultural revolution.

What Is the Paleo Diet?

If you read through the list of foods you can eat on paleo diet, you will quickly see that it is indeed what people ate before the invention of agriculture some 10,000 years ago. People hunted and gathered their food, and only consumed that which grew naturally on plants, bushes, and trees. The concept of the paleo diet itself was popularized in the 1970s by gastroenterologist Walter L. Voegtlin, and it has continued to grow in followers since then.

List of Foods You Can Eat On The Paleo Diet:

So what is included on the list of foods you can eat on the paleo diet? The basis of your diet should be meat, but it should be free from fats. That is because fat contains high levels of cholesterol, and that can lead to heart problems. It is all about lean meat, therefore, and it should be from an animal that was grass-fed and hasn’t had antibiotics in their food. Grass-fed beef, therefore, is the best. You can also consume turkey, game hen, chicken, or other forms of poultry, but you should remove the skin, which is full of fat. Eggs are fine. Game meat, such as goat, rabbit, alligator, and deer, are absolutely fine as well.

Then, there are the fruits, vegetables, berries, and nuts. You can have as many of those as you like. Peanuts, however, are classed as pulses and should therefore be avoided. The idea that fruits make you fat because they are full of sugar is not a concern in the paleo diet. Yes, the sugar levels are high, but they are completely natural and healthy. Since refined sugars are processed, you will not be able to consume any of that as part of the paleo diet anymore, so you can have as much fruit as you want. And if you do want to add sugar to something, you will have to stick to honey only. Similarly, if you’re hoping for spices, you will have to stick to natural herbs only. Salt is definitely off the list!

Essentially, the list of foods you can eat on paleo diet includes lots of grass fed, organic, pasture raised meat, shellfish, and fish, as well as vegetables, fruits, nuts, and roots. You cannot eat any dairy products, salt, sugar, or processed oils. If you are ready to swap to paleo, you should start by really studying the list and changing your kitchen based on it. Remove all the things you are no longer allowed and replace them with all the foods allowed in the paleo diet. Be prepared for a few difficult days as your body adjusts to this new way of eating, but you will find that, in the end, it will be totally worth it.
