Once upon a time, all you had to do was go to college, and you would be headhunted for a job for life just before your graduation. Today, this has all changed. What this means is that it may be time for you to get started in using new ways to search job postings. That is the only way to find a job in which you will be valued, as well as properly paid. The following are some of the ways in which you are likely to sabotage yourself.

1. Assuming You’re Not Qualified

When you search job postings, it is likely that you will come across positions that you know you can do, but you think the employer won’t give you a chance because you don’t have certain qualifications. That is selling yourself short! If you know you can do it, tell the employer about that. Character is far more important than a piece of paper.

2. Only Applying for Existing Job Postings

When you do your search, you will only see the available positions. You may come across a company that has a job available that isn’t for you at all, but you love the company. If that happens, send them a message with a cover letter and your resume. It is known as an “open application” and it will, if nothing else, get your name circulated in that company.

3. Sticking to Your Geographical Location Only

If you live in Chattanooga, TN, it is unlikely that you will look for jobs in places like Grover Beach, CA. It’s simply too far. However, in so doing, you will lose out on all those positions that encourage remote working. Many jobs now have remote working opportunities, which mean that it doesn’t matter where you are located at all. And the beauty of it is that all these jobs are posted online, so there is no reason why you should miss out on them at all.

4. Forgetting about the No College Degree Needed Positions

If you have graduated from college, you will probably search job postings with a filter set on “college degree required”. Again, you could be potentially missing out on some really cool job opportunities. For instance, jobs such as personal carer, real estate professional, or funeral arranger don’t need you to have a college degree, but you could be better at them than someone who doesn’t have a degree because you did study as well. And those careers have significant growth opportunities as well.

5. Not Looking for Better Things Once You Have Work

The easiest way to find a new job, is if you are employed. That is because you aren’t desperate in finding a job. You simply want something better and more suited to your personal needs. Don’t stop looking just because you have already found a job, therefore. Rather, remember that it will be much easier to find something else while employed, because you are not under a lot of pressure. Hence, keep those email alerts you created live, just in case your dream job suddenly pops up.
