Once women start to mature, they may think that they have to change their hair drastically as well. In reality, flattering hairstyles for women over 50 are not all that different from the other ones. You may not be as interested in being fashionable anymore, however, as you feel comfortable in your own skin and happy with who you are. That being said, there are a couple of things you can do that will flatter you if you’re a mature woman.

Guidelines on the Flattering Hairstyle Ideas for Women Over 50:

Curls and Waves:

If you want to be really elegant, then opt for long hair that ends in curls and waves. This style allows your hair to gather in a loose fashion, and this is elegant regardless of the occasion. It is very easy to get this look as well, using some textured hairspray and a large barrelled curling iron. There is a reason why many Hollywood stars over the age of 50 have this style!

Layered and Short:

But you don’t have to go long, thankfully, as many older women struggle to grow their hair. You can also go for layered and short. Cut your hair to about the length of a bob, but add loads of layers to it. This is the look that the likes of Katie Holmes are often seen with. It is textured, so you can make it look more voluminous and defined as well. Plus, you can sweep your bangs to the side. It is a reasonably easy to maintain style, although you do have to texturize the style to make it look sexy, flipped out, and cute. If you use good texturizing products, combined with an excellent shampoo and conditioner, you will be fine though.

Go Long!

Going back to the longer flattering hairstyles for women over 50, you have to make sure that, if you indeed go for long hair, it is still stylish. Don’t just let it hang lifelessly, as this will actually make you look older. Plus, women over the age of 50 do find that their hair is starting to thin out a bit, and having excessive, un-styled length can make that worse. Instead, clip some of the hair back behind your ears, and you will instantly look like you have lots more volume. So as you can see, there is no need to cut off the hair you have spent so long growing, you just need to know what to do with it.

Color or No Color?

Lastly, you have to think about color. It is likely that you will have at least some gray by now, which leaves you with two options: rock the gray and just let it be natural, or dye your hair to hide it. If you choose the latter, don’t dye your hair dark, but stick to a lighter color instead. This will camouflage the gray for longer, meaning you don’t have to dye your hair as often either. In so doing, you will protect the integrity of your hair as well, which is important since growing it back can become a bit difficult when we age.
