Today, almost everybody has moved to broadband. It is the speed of broadband internet that initially allowed it to take over the position of dial-up, and things have just moved forward since then. What few people know, however, is that not all broadband are created equal. It is important, therefore, to understand what those differences are.

The Different Types of Broadband Internet:

When people speak about broadband internet access, the speed of broadband internet is a blanket term. It actually includes satellite, cable, and DSL high speed internet connections. DSL is a type of internet that goes through a person’s telephone line, although it is wholly different from dial-up. Essentially, DSL shares its space with the telephone and it gives you fast connection and internet speeds.

Then, there is cable. If you care about the speed of broadband internet above all else, this is the one to go for. It is also the one that most people have, and the one that most people prefer. They are efficient, reliable, and fast. The remaining option is satellite, which is most suitable for people who live in more rural parts of the country. If someone is unable to get cable or DSL, then satellite is the way to go.

The final option that exists is WiFi internet access. WiFi means that you network wirelessly. In other words, it means that you can be connected to the internet from a “hot spot”, without any cables. Most of us have WiFi at home, and it is also found in shopping centers and other such areas.

The Speed of Broadband Internet:

If you want to know how fast your connection is, you can do this with a speed test. These tests are available online and are generally completely free. Running such a test every once in a while will make sure that you know your broadband is performing as it should do.

There are numerous online broadband speed tests. Generally, you will have to include the area code of your geographical location. You then have to tell them what type of connection you use, and who your provider is. The speed test will then start to run. It will give you an evaluation of your internet’s performance, as well as comparing it to other providers that you may want to consider in your area.

Should you find out that your speed is not as good as it can be, or as you thought it was, there are a number of things you can do in order to improve it and get the best speed possible:

1. Remove any spyware.
2. Tweak your PC or laptop.
3. Install software to make your connection better.
4. Consider upgrading your hardware.
5. Manually change your connection settings.

When you perform you speed test, make sure that you do so at different points during the day. There will be some fluctuation depending on when more people are online. Do also make sure to use a number of different tests so that you know your reading is accurate.
